Kenya Smart Buildings Trainees Society

What KSBTS
Actually Does

KSBTS is a trainee society — not a professional body. Everything we do is aimed at one thing: building the competency of ICT, Electrical, and HVAC-R trainees in TVET institutions so they graduate as Kenya's next generation of smart buildings technicians.

Peer Learning & Society Meetings

Regular meetings where ICT, Electrical, and HVAC-R trainees learn together across disciplines — sharing knowledge on BMS, IoT, smart controls, and refrigerant handling that formal curriculum alone doesn't cover.

Safe HVAC Disposal Training

KSBTS is working with stakeholders to deliver safe refrigerant recovery training to Kenya's 1,100 licensed scrap metal dealers — critical since the HCFC full phase-out took effect January 2026.

In Development

Smart Building Hub

A live demonstration environment at RTI showcasing Smart HVAC-R, BAS/BMS, and Lifts & Escalators — giving trainees hands-on exposure to real integrated building systems.

Ongoing

Industry Awareness & Linkages

Connecting trainees to the real smart buildings industry — technology vendors, system integrators, and employers across Kenya who are building the built environment of tomorrow.

Peer Learning Across Disciplines

The smart buildings industry doesn't divide neatly into ICT, Electrical, and HVAC-R. A BMS technician needs to understand all three. A refrigeration technician needs to understand how their system integrates with the building automation network. An ICT trainee needs to understand the physical environment their systems control.

KSBTS meetings bring trainees from all three departments together — creating the cross-disciplinary fluency that the industry actually demands, and that no single course can fully provide.

Safe HVAC Disposal Training for Licensed Scrap Metal Dealers

Kenya's HCFC phase-out took full effect January 1, 2026. Under the Montreal Protocol, every end-of-life AC unit arriving at a scrap yard must have its refrigerant gas recovered before the unit is processed. Yet 1,100 licensed scrap metal dealers currently operate with no training on safe gas handling — workers cut cylinders and refrigerant escapes directly to atmosphere.

Working with interested stakeholders, KSBTS delivers Safe HVAC Disposal Training as a prerequisite for annual license renewal — deploying recovery machines on-site and training toward the full 1,100-dealer national target.
